LONDON, ENGLAND LONGITUDE: 0° 06' 88.99" A 540-tonne boring machine nicknamed Carla breaks through at Woolwich Arsenal after creating a tunnel 35m underneath the River Thames to link the Docklands Light Railway to Woolwich in South London. Carla cost £5 million to build, removed about 104,000 cubic metres of material, is 90m long, 6m in diameter and moves at a top speed of 3m per hour.
