Stadium 974, one of the eight stadia that will be used in the FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar in November and December 2022. The 974 stadium has a modular design, and incorporates 974 recycled shipping containers in homage to the site's industrial history and the international dialling code for Qatar (+974). Some of the containers house stadium amenities such as bathrooms and concessions. The shipping containers and seats used by the stadium are later to be dismantled and provided as assistance to underdeveloped countries in Africa; it is the first temporary venue in FIFA World Cup history.' The Sony Filling station in Savar district, Dhaka, Bangladesh. This bizarre creation was the brainchild of a flamboyant downtown-Dhaka cinema owner who also owns and runs this filling station. Around 15 years ago he decided to build a model of an airplane to serve as the roof covering for his filling station, and also built the station office in the style of an airport hangar. Local rumour says that the owner was prevented from installing lights inside the airplane model or on its wings, in case pilots passing above might become confused and attempt to land their plane nearby. The dress rehearsal of Beethoven's Fidelio by the English National Opera at the Coliseum in London.' Two hundred years after its premiere, Beethoven's Fidelio continues to thrill audiences with its many echoes of the composer's symphonic works, powerful orchestral imagination and exquisite melodies. Calixto Bieito's unique vision of Beethoven's only opera explores the psychological prison of each character, in a production which is contemporary and yet abstract, and which always seeks to challenge our expectations and certainties about this much-admired opera. Fidelio is conducted by ENO Music Director Edward Gardner. The cast of this ground-breaking new production is led by acclaimed soprano Emma Bell as Leonore and Stuart Skelton as Florestan.' London. The Shed is a temporary venue in front of the National Theatre from April 2013 – February 2014. Celebrating new theatre that is original, ambitious and unexpected, it will present work by theatre-makers familiar to the NT as well as emerging voices; and provides a third stage during the Cottesloe Theatre's closure for the NT Future redevelopment. The Shed will have 225 seats at £12 and £20. Conceived by architects Haworth Tompkins and theatre consultants Charcoalblue, The Shed was designed and built in little more than a year, a collaborative process between the building designers, the National Theatre, and theatre-makers who will work in the space, in a way that more closely resembled a theatre show than a conventional construction project. Its temporary nature, building on Haworth Tompkins' earlier temporary projects like the Almeida Theatre at Gainsborough Studios and King’s Cross, permits a structure that can be seen less as a building than as an event or arts installation - a vibrant intervention on London's South Bank. Arab Hall, Leighton House. Refurbishment and restoration of Leighton House Museum From November 2008 the Museum closed for 18 months to facilitate a programme of refurbishment and restoration funded by The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Recent condition surveys have revealed the need to completely re-wire the electrical services throughout the museum. The central heating system has not been upgraded since it was first installed over 60 years ago and does not provide the environmental conditions required for the museum’s collection of paintings. The fire detection systems are also in need of upgrading. The disruption that these works will cause provides an opportunity to look again at the decoration and presentation of the interiors. New research and paint analysis has confirmed that Leighton’s original decorative schemes differed in several important respects from the current appearance of the interiors. The floors in the dining room and drawing room were painted red and blue respectively. The dome of the Arab Hall was gilded. The original floorboards on the first floor survive beneath modern flooring laid over them in the 1960s. Completing these works will restore the house to its original spectacular appearance, recreating Leighton’s private ‘Palace of Art’ as it appeared at the time of his death. London.
